Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are long indented streaks or lines that are developed on the skin; this condition is mostly observed when the skin goes through higher stretching stress. Any individual can get these marks, but most of the times, they are found in women. They do occur on various body parts i.e. upper arms, thighs, hips, breasts, etc. When women undergo pregnancy, the often undergo weight gain loss, and thus the skin undergoes intense stretching. In scientific terms, the collagen and elastin get ruptured, these elements are principal supporters of our skin, and thus narrow bands are formed on the skin.

A person may also get stretch marks if there are hormone fluctuations. You may also get stretch marks due to –

  • Bodybuilding
  • Quick weight gain
  • Breast surgery
  • Using heavy amounts of steroids
  • Cushing’s Syndrome


Who is at a greater risk of getting stretch marks?

  • A woman
  • A pregnant woman
  • An obese person
  • Persons with hereditary stretch marks problems

There are two types of stretch marks viz. red and white. Red stretch marks are called as Striae Rubra, and these are caused due to overstretching of the upper layer of the skin. Thus, blood vessels are observed in these kinds of stretch marks. White stretch marks or Striae Alba are stretch marks that are formed when the blood vessels recede and fat come up beneath the upper dermal layer.


Stretch Marks Symptoms

There are various types of stretch marks, and every stretch mark does not seem the same. The symptoms of stretch marks include –

  • Streaks or lines on the skin
  • Streaks of various colors – black, red, pink, and blue
  • Streaks that fade into a lighter shade
  • Lines or streaks on various parts of the body viz. thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and breasts

Today, we are going to speak upon the treatments of stretch marks. Dermatologists have a wide variety of treatments for this cause, wherein stretch can be
fixed or reduced substantially.


Treatments like CO2 laser, fractional CO2 laser, Fractal Erbium YAG laser, Erbium Glass Laser, Nano-Fractional Laser, and MNRF are the most modern laser treatments for fixing or reducing stretch marks. Another form of treatment is PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a technology that can be used to reduce stretch marks by a great
margin. If both the technologies are used together, then it only takes about 4-5 seconds to reduce your stretch marks substantially.


Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is a modern technique to heal injuries faster with the help of platelets in the blood. Platelets speed up the healing process and stop bleeding on the site of injury. Platelets do contain blood clotting promoters and proteins that help wounds to heal faster. A sample of blood is taken from the patient wherein it is centrifuged to separate other blood components from the platelets. This platelet concentration is injected on the site of injury or an area on the body that needs to be treated.
