Our nerves release acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter chemical that binds onto the receptors within muscle to make them contract. Wrinkle relaxers like Botox® bind to the acetylcholine receptors blocking the signal from nerve to the muscles. After a muscle has been injected, the nerves still send out a signal to the muscle to contract. The acetylcholine is still released, but is not able to bind to the muscle resulting in reduced muscle activity. This prevents the contraction of muscles that cause lines temporarily.
The binding process usually starts within 48 hours from the time of injection and results start to appear in 7-10 days.
While it is most effective for dynamic wrinkles which appear when the muscle contracts, it can also be helpful in softening the wrinkles which appear even without muscle contraction.
